He didn't follow Indian music. He changed its direction.

What he actually did.

Four decades, four companies, and one question underneath all of it: does the artist get to be the author of their own works?

06 — The International Cassette Box (IC Box)

Open and shut.
It didn’t crack. Before long, nobody else’s did either.

Indian cassettes came in a brittle case that cracked in the post, allowing dust to settle on the tape. Magnasound moulded its own IC Box — a thicker plastic shell, an integral hinge, a lid that sealed.

08 — Magnaio

The catalog was sold. The question wasn't answered.

Ten years of Shashi’s research produced two conclusions on the basis of which Magnaio is being built.

Conclusion One

AI should assist the musician, not replace the musician.

Conclusion Two

The creator of music should have undisputed ownership of their work.

Generating a song with AI is largely solved. What the industry has not solved is the ambiguity surrounding the authorship of the song — so Magnaio is building tools that settle ownership as the song is made, rather than leaving it to be argued about afterwards.

Message

I am happy to learn that a special collection of Hindustani Classical Music, rendered by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, is being released on the occasion of the maestro’s 78th birthday on February 4, 2000.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is undoubtedly the leading Hindustani classical vocalist in the country today. Listening to his rendition of Miyan-Ki-Todi, Ramkali, Gaud-Sarang, Bhimpalasi, Puriya Dhanashree, Yaman, Shudh Kalyan, Kedar, Shankara, Durga, Darbari and Miyan Malhar is a transcendental experience. He has truly attained “Siddhi” over these raags.

By bringing out this excellent collection of Panditji’s work, Magnasound will be paying tribute to this great artiste and doing great service to all lovers of Hindustani classical music.
